On May 14, Soka Gakkai Indonesia (SGI-Indonesia)
members gathered for the long-awaited opening of their new
headquarters building in Jakarta, Indonesia, attended by guests from
various sectors of Indonesian society, including Mrs. Mufidah Jusuf
Kalla, wife of Indonesian Vice President Muhammad Jusuf Kalla, and
President Hasanuddin Yusuf of the Indonesia National Youth Council
Central Board.
In a message, SGI President Daisaku Ikeda expressed
his heartfelt hopes for SGI-Indonesia members to all create glorious
and triumphant lives of ultimate fulfillment based on the humanistic
philosophy of Nichiren Buddhism and asked that they contribute to
their local communities and to Indonesian society to the best of
their ability.
In recent years, especially in
anticipation of their new center, the SGI-Indonesia members have
been promoting goodwill and understanding in society through various
events. In August 2005, they sponsored "Youth Concert for Peace: Hug
the World with Music," a musical extravaganza held in celebration of
Indonesia's 60th Independence Day, and in December 2005, they held
chapter level general meetings and invited guests, with a total
attendance of 17,000. Beginning April 2006 SGI-Indonesia has been
sponsoring a national tour of "Dialogue with Nature," an exhibition
of nature and scenic photographs taken by the SGI President.
During the May 14 celebrations, the Indonesian University of
Education and the Indonesia Photographers Organization recognized
SGI President Daisaku Ikeda for his leadership of the SGI that
promotes intercultural understanding through educational and
cultural exchanges.
The conferrals were held in the main hall of the
new three-story building, with a seating capacity of 1,200.
Indonesian University of Education Rector Sunaryo Kartadinata
entrusted SGI General Director Yoshitaka Oba with a Culture and
Education Contribution Award, and the Indonesia Photographers Organization's President Triyudha Ichwan, a Lifetime Membership Award,
both for Mr. Ikeda.
Since its establishment in 1954, the Indonesian
University of Education has shouldered the task of training teachers
and spearheading the country's education programs. Rector
Kartadinata expressed hopes to continue deepening intercultural
understanding and peace efforts, in response to Mr. Ikeda's personal
efforts in this regard. The Indonesia Photographer Organization is
a prestigious organization that has promulgated the art of
photography worldwide, through its national network of
photographers.
Mr. Triyudha said Mr. Ikeda's photographs, which
express the natural beauty of the world, have inspired the many
organization members, and especially beginning amateurs.
